Bern Balfe is based in Edinburgh and set up the Architectural Collaborative in 2001, with the aim of developing collaborative ways of working to design and produce buildings. Building is really a collaborative art, and successful work needs a good foundation of trust to allow close teamwork between the employer, the builder, and the design team. Bern’s design work is guided by a belief in the power of imagination, respect for practical knowledge and ability, an enthusiasm for making things, an awareness of our responsibility to use materials and energy wisely, and an anti-monumental approach to problem solving.
