Case Study 2: Woodland Bedroom
This was a project to create a new bedroom and bathroom in the
attic of an existing house. We opened up the end of the roof and
re-built it in a different shape to provide headroom for a lofty
new space.
The house is surrounded by trees. The new construction is framed
in sandblasted timber, with recycled paper insulation, and clad
on the outside with cedar boards. We re-used the old slates on
the roof and also used re-cycled doors.
The big timber windows are double glazed with insulating glass.
Our aim was to reduce running and construction costs and to keep
the building as simple and low-tech as possible. We also tried
to use non-toxic materials, and as much timber as possible.
There are windows on all four sides of the room to give an awareness
of the passage of time and the seasons. Sunlight filters through
the trees from the West to give a dappled light on the floor.
There are stunning long distance views from the windows and squirrels
playing in the branches outside, which make it a tranquil place
in which to sleep. All the joinery work except for the windows
was done on site, some of it in the field behind the house; for
a time it must have been the joinery workshop with the best view
in Edinburgh.
